How to click faster: techniques, training and a good CPS

Updated October 1, 2026

Clicks per second (CPS) matter in Minecraft PvP, clicker games and some shooters. The good news: most people can add 1–3 CPS with better technique and a bit of practice.

First, measure your starting point

Take a 5-second and a 10-second CPS test. The 5-second result shows your burst speed; the 10-second result shows how well you hold it. Note both – that is your baseline.

Test your clicks per second and save your personal best.

What is a good CPS?

  • 5–7 CPS: normal clicking. Most people start here.
  • 8–10 CPS: fast regular clicking – good for most games.
  • 10–14 CPS: usually needs jitter clicking.
  • 15+ CPS: butterfly or drag clicking.

The four clicking techniques

1. Regular clicking – improve it first

Rest your wrist on the desk and click from the finger, using the fingertip near the front of the button where travel is shortest. Keep your hand relaxed. A relaxed 8 CPS lasts longer than a tense 10.

2. Jitter clicking

Tense the forearm slightly so the hand vibrates and the finger taps the button rapidly. It reaches 10–14 CPS but tires you quickly and strains the wrist, so use short bursts and take breaks. Stop if it hurts.

3. Butterfly clicking

Place two fingers (index and middle) on the same button and tap them alternately. Many players reach 15–25 CPS this way. It depends on the mouse: some mice filter very fast repeat clicks, others register each finger.

4. Drag clicking

Drag a finger along the button so friction makes it bounce many times. It can exceed 25 CPS but only works on mice with suitable switches and a grippy surface, and it wears the button quickly.

A 2-week training plan

  1. Warm up with two relaxed 5-second tests.
  2. Burst training: five 5-second tests with 30 seconds of rest between them. Focus on rhythm – watch the “rhythm consistency” score.
  3. Endurance: one 30-second test, trying to keep your speed chart flat.
  4. Do this 3–4 times a week, never when your hand or wrist hurts. Compare with your baseline after two weeks.

What Minecraft players need to know

In Minecraft Java Edition 1.8-style PvP, high CPS helps because every click can hit. Since the 1.9 combat update, an attack cooldown means timing matters far more than clicking fast. Many servers limit CPS (often somewhere around 15–20) and some ban butterfly or drag clicking or auto-clickers – always check the server rules.

FAQ

Does a better mouse increase CPS?

It can help a little: light mice with crisp, short-travel switches are easier to click fast. Technique and relaxation matter much more.

Is jitter clicking bad for your hand?

It puts a lot of tension on the forearm and wrist. Use it in short bursts, warm up and stop at any pain. Regular clicking is the safest.

Why is my CPS lower in the 30-second test?

Muscles tire at high speed. A 20–30% drop compared with the 5-second test is normal; training endurance narrows the gap.
