Middle mouse button not working? How to fix the wheel click

Updated October 2, 2026

The wheel scrolls fine, but pressing it does nothing – no new tab from a link, no autoscroll, no ping in your game. The middle button is a separate switch under the wheel, and it fails for different reasons than scrolling does.

Step 1: test the wheel click

Open the mouse button test and press the wheel down firmly, straight down, about 10 times. The middle button should light up every time. You can also use the scroll wheel test, which counts wheel clicks separately from scrolling.

Check whether your mouse sends the middle click at all.

Open the mouse button test →
  • The test shows every click – the mouse is fine; the problem is a setting in your system, browser or game.
  • Some or all clicks are missing – the middle switch is worn, dirty or remapped by mouse software.

If the test sees the click

  • Browser: middle-clicking a link opens it in a new tab in every major browser. Autoscroll (click the wheel, then move the mouse) is on by default in Chrome and Edge on Windows; in Firefox, turn it on under Settings → Use autoscrolling.
  • Games: assign "Mouse 3" or "Middle mouse button" in the game's control settings – many games leave it unbound.
  • Touchpad and laptop: on a touchpad, a three-finger tap is often the middle click; check your touchpad settings.
  • Mac: macOS supports middle click, but some apps ignore it. Mouse software or utilities can map it to a shortcut.

If the test doesn't see the click

1. Reset the mouse software

Gaming mouse apps (G HUB, Synapse, SteelSeries GG, iCUE) can map the wheel click to a DPI change, macro or "do nothing". Set it back to Middle click – also in the onboard profile stored on the mouse.

2. Press straight down

Some wheels need a firm, straight press; pressing at an angle can tilt the wheel left or right instead. On mice with a tilt wheel, the scroll test shows tilt as horizontal scrolling.

3. Clean under the wheel

Unplug the mouse and blow compressed air around the wheel while pressing it. Hair and dust wrapped around the wheel axle can stop it from reaching the switch.

4. Replace the switch or use the warranty

The middle switch is usually smaller than the left and right switches, and it wears out on mice used for games that rely on it. It can be replaced with soldering, or claimed under warranty with a short video of the test.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my scroll wheel scroll but not click?

Scrolling and clicking use different parts: scrolling uses an encoder, clicking uses a small switch under the wheel. One can fail while the other keeps working.

How do I middle click without a middle button?

On many laptops, a three-finger tap on the touchpad works. You can also remap a side button to middle click in your mouse software.

The middle click opens autoscroll instead of a new tab. Is that wrong?

No – middle-clicking empty page space starts autoscroll, while middle-clicking a link opens it in a new tab. Both are normal.
