Mouse left click not working? 9 fixes that actually help

Updated October 2, 2026

The cursor moves, but the left button does nothing – or it works only every few presses. Because the left button does almost everything, this is one of the most frustrating mouse problems. The good news: it is often a setting, not a broken mouse.

Step 1: test the left button

Open the mouse button test and press the left button 20 times at a normal pace. Every press should light up the left button and add one to its counter. Watch for three things:

  • Nothing lights up at all – a setting, the connection or a dead switch.
  • Some presses are missing – a worn or dirty switch that no longer makes contact every time.
  • The right button lights up instead – the buttons are swapped in your settings.

See every press of every button – including missed clicks.

Software fixes

1. Check that the buttons aren't swapped

On Windows, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse and make sure Primary mouse button is set to Left. On Mac, check System Settings → Mouse → Secondary click. A swapped setting makes the left button act as a right click.

2. Turn off ClickLock

In Windows, open Additional mouse settings → Buttons and untick ClickLock. With it on, a slightly long press "locks" the button down, which feels like clicks not registering.

3. Reset your mouse software

Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse, SteelSeries GG and similar apps can assign the left button to something else. Set it back to "Left click" or reset the profile – and remember that many gaming mice store profiles in the mouse itself.

4. Restart Windows Explorer

If clicks stop working everywhere at once but the cursor still moves, Windows itself may be stuck. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, find Windows Explorer, right-click it and choose Restart. If that fixes it, the mouse is fine.

5. Reinstall the driver

Open Device Manager → Mice and other pointing devices, right-click your mouse, choose Uninstall device and restart. Windows reinstalls the standard driver automatically.

Hardware fixes

6. Try another port, cable or computer

Plug the mouse into a USB port directly on the computer, not a hub. For wireless mice, change the battery and move the receiver closer. If the left button fails on another computer too, it is the mouse.

7. Clean around the button

Unplug the mouse and blow compressed air into the gap under the left button while pressing it, then press it firmly 50–100 times. Dust and oxidation are common reasons a switch misses clicks.

8. Use the warranty

A left button that misses clicks after a year or two is a known wear problem. If the mouse is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer – a short video of the button test missing presses is good evidence.

9. Replace the switch

The left button sits on a small micro switch that can be replaced with basic soldering. Popular replacements are Omron D2F-series and Kailh GM switches – check the size of the original first. A repair shop can usually do it quickly.

If your mouse clicks twice instead of not at all, see mouse double-clicking on a single click.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my left click work only sometimes?

Missed clicks usually mean the switch contacts are worn or dirty, so they don't connect on every press. Cleaning can help for a while; replacing the switch fixes it for good.

My left click works in the test but not in one program. Why?

Then the mouse is fine. That program may be frozen, need admin rights, or have its own key bindings. Restart it or check its settings.

Can I use the mouse while the left button is broken?

Yes – swap the primary button to the right in your mouse settings as a temporary fix, or use a touchpad until the mouse is repaired.
