Razer mouse double-clicking? How to test and fix it
Updated October 2, 2026
Your Razer mouse fires two clicks when you press once: double shots in games, files opening by themselves, drag-and-drop that lets go. Here's how to confirm it and what actually fixes it.
Why Razer mice double-click
Older Razer mice – including many DeathAdder, Basilisk and Mamba models – use mechanical micro switches under the main buttons. Like all mechanical switches, they wear: the metal contact starts to bounce and one press is sent as two. Since around 2019, many Razer mice (for example newer Viper, DeathAdder and Basilisk versions) use Razer Optical Mouse Switches, which register clicks with light instead of a metal contact and are designed to avoid this problem.
Step 1: confirm it with the test
Open the double-click test and click slowly, one click at a time, 30–50 times with the faulty button. Red bars mean phantom double clicks – the switch is bouncing. Then check the other buttons with the mouse button test.
Record the red bars on video – useful for a warranty claim.
Open the double-click test →Step 2: rule out settings
- Razer Synapse: open your mouse, check the active profile and make sure the left button is set to "Left click", not a macro or "double click". If you use on-board profiles, check those too.
- Windows: make sure File Explorer opens items with a double click and ClickLock is off – see our general double-click guide.
- Update: update Synapse and install any firmware update it offers for your mouse.
Step 3: quick fixes
- Compressed air. Short bursts under the faulty button while pressing it, then press the button firmly 50–100 times. This can clear oxidation from the contacts for a while.
- Another port or computer. Plug it directly into the computer and try a second PC. If the double clicks follow the mouse, it's the switch.
- Wireless models: charge the mouse and keep the dongle close with the USB extender. Weak signal doesn't usually cause double clicks, but it rules out interference.
Note: for most mechanical-switch Razer mice, Synapse doesn't offer a debounce setting, so the bounce can't be filtered in software.
Step 4: warranty
Razer peripherals come with a limited warranty, typically one to two years depending on the product and region – check yours on Razer's support site. Contact Razer Support with your serial number, proof of purchase and the short video of the double-click test. Replacements for this fault are common.
Step 5: replace the switch
Out of warranty, swapping the micro switch is a cheap, permanent fix for anyone who can solder (or any repair shop). Open the mouse – screws are usually under the feet – and replace the left or right switch with a matching one, such as an Omron D2F-series or Kailh GM switch. Check the original switch's size and pin layout before ordering. Mice with optical switches use a different design and usually aren't repaired this way.
Frequently asked questions
Do Razer optical switches double-click?
Optical switches have no bouncing metal contact, so the classic double-click fault is very unlikely. If an optical-switch mouse double-clicks, check settings and macros first.
Can Razer Synapse fix double-clicking?
Not for a worn switch. Synapse can only rule out settings and macros. If the test shows red bars, the switch needs cleaning, replacing or a warranty claim.
Is it safe to open my Razer mouse?
Yes, if you are careful, but it usually voids the warranty and peeling off the feet can damage them. Try the warranty first if you still have it.
