SteelSeries mouse double-clicking? How to test and fix it
Updated October 2, 2026
Your SteelSeries mouse clicks twice when you press once: double shots in games, folders opening by themselves, dragged items dropping halfway. Here's how to confirm it in a minute and what actually fixes it.
Why SteelSeries mice double-click
Most SteelSeries mice – including many Rival, Sensei and Aerox models – use mechanical micro switches under the main buttons. Over time the metal contact inside starts to bounce, and one press is sent to the computer as two. The Prime series uses SteelSeries' magnetic-optical "Prestige OM" switches, which register clicks without a bouncing metal contact and are designed to avoid this fault.
Step 1: confirm it with the test
Open the double-click test and click slowly, one click at a time, 30–50 times with the faulty button. Red bars mean phantom double clicks – the switch is bouncing. Then check the other buttons with the mouse button test.
Record the red bars on video – useful for a warranty claim.
Open the double-click test →Step 2: rule out settings
- SteelSeries GG (Engine): open your mouse, check that the left button is set to "Left click" – not a macro, "double click" or another action – in the active configuration and in any configuration saved to the mouse.
- Windows: make sure File Explorer opens items with a double click and ClickLock is off – see our general double-click guide.
- Update: update SteelSeries GG and install any firmware update it offers for your mouse.
Step 3: quick fixes
- Compressed air. Short bursts under the faulty button while pressing it, then press the button firmly 50–100 times. This can clear oxidation from the contacts for a while.
- Another port or computer. Plug it directly into the computer and try a second PC. If the double clicks follow the mouse, it's the switch.
- Wireless models: charge the mouse and keep the 2.4 GHz dongle close with the extension adapter. Weak signal rarely causes double clicks, but it rules out interference.
Most SteelSeries mice don't offer a debounce setting in GG, so a bouncing switch usually can't be filtered out in software.
Step 4: warranty
SteelSeries peripherals come with a limited warranty, typically one to two years depending on the region (two years in the EU). Contact SteelSeries Support with your serial number, proof of purchase and the short video of the double-click test – phantom double clicks are a well-known fault and replacements are common.
Step 5: replace the switch
Out of warranty, replacing the micro switch is a cheap, permanent fix for anyone who can solder, or for a local repair shop. Open the mouse – screws are usually under the feet – and swap the left or right switch for a matching one, such as an Omron D2F-series or Kailh GM switch. Check the size and pin layout of the original first. Mice with magnetic-optical switches use a different design and aren't repaired this way.
Frequently asked questions
Which SteelSeries mice don't double-click?
Models with magnetic-optical Prestige OM switches, such as the Prime series, have no bouncing metal contact, so the classic double-click fault is very unlikely. Mechanical-switch models can develop it over time.
Can SteelSeries GG fix double-clicking?
Not if the switch is worn. GG can only rule out settings and macros. If the test shows red bars, the switch needs cleaning, replacing or a warranty claim.
Is it safe to open my SteelSeries mouse?
Yes, if you're careful, but it usually voids the warranty and peeling off the feet can damage them. Use the warranty first if you still have it.
